John Somerville-Hendrie

Secretary

I attended Durham University and completed a degree in Sport, Health & Exercise along with representing the 1st XI Cricket team.

After graduating I embarked on a career in the sports industry with the International Management Group founded by sports agent Mark McCormack.

I travelled and experienced Golf in different countries including Dubai before settling in Berkshire and accepting the role as Assistant Manager with Mill Ride Golf Club.

After 10 years a relocation to Kent led me to Knole Park Golf Club where I accepted the position of Operations Manager before being given the opportunity as Club Secretary.

My current handicap is 11 and I have a keen interest in most sports. I'm newly married and enjoy spending my spare time with family.

I joined as Assistant Secretary over ten years ago,  after working in the City in the 80’s & 90’s , followed by a very happy ten-year spell as a teacher at Dorton House School for the Blind.

The Office is a busy place, no day is ever the same . One of my current extra roles is that of Junior Organiser , a role that I have wanted to get involved with  for some time, as I have been both a Scout leader and Sunday School teacher locally in Chiddingstone in the past.

I have been married for 35 years and have two sons, aged 23 and 21

I am very keen on live music , and play the drums in a Punk band in my spare time

Just about manage to play off 8 , playing a couple of times a month, usually with my dog Billy

I gained an NCH in sports turf at College and s tarted greenkeeping at 17 as an apprentice at a club in Suffolk. 

After 3 years I moved t o Royal Norwich golf club as an assistant greenkeeper.

From Royal Norwich I gained an internship to work in America for 18 months working at Scioto Country Club and worked the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village, Ohio.

On my return to the UK I enrolled and passed my Foundation Degree at Myerscough college.

After six months working at The Wisley as an assistant greenkeeper, I soon became 1st assistant and later promoted to Deputy Head greenkeeper and was finally Head Greenkeeper in 2011

From The Wisley I gained further experience at Tandridge Golf Club & Malden Golf Club before being a ppointed Head greenkeeper at Knole Park Golf Club in 2019.

I started as a PGA Professional and have spent the last 10 years in a veriety of roles within the golf industry. Beginning my career at Dale Hill Hotel & Golf Club as an Assistant Professional I soon moved up the ranks to Head Professional at St Augustines Golf Club in Kent.

From there I joined a local club, North Foreland Golf Club, as a Teaching Professional but really found my calling once moving to Nizels Golf & Country Club as the Golf Operations Manager.

After four years I joined the team, here at Knole Park as Club Operations Manager, overseeing Club Competitions and our Food & Beverage department.

I'm especially excited about my most recent role as a new father even if it cuts in my time gardening.
